ITC Institutes GSP Investigation
In response to a request from the USTR, the International Trade Commission is instituting an investigation to provide advice as to the probable economic effect of granting duty-free treatment through the Generalized System of Preferences program for several products.

In response to a request from the USTR, the International Trade Commission is instituting an investigation to provide advice as to the probable economic effect of granting duty-free treatment through the Generalized System of Preferences program for several products, including the following items handled by some AFI members:
0804.10.20 Dates, whole, with or without pits
0804.10.40 Dates, other, with pits
0804.10.60 Dates, other, with pits removed
0804.10.80 Dates, other
2008.99.25 Dates, other
The products are currently eligible for duty-free treatment if imported from "least developed beneficiary countries," which does not include most GSP-eligible countries. The petition, if granted, would apply to all GSP-eligible suppliers.
A public hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., March 23 at the ITC in Washington, DC. Persons wishing to appear at the public hearing should file a letter with the Secretary at ITC not later than March 4. In lieu of or in addition to participating in the hearing, interested parties are invited to submit written statements to the Secretary, U.S. International Trade Commission, 500 E Street, SW., Washington, DC 20436 by March 7.
The ITC will seek to provide its advice not later than May 9.
