We’ve received some more information from an official at the U.S. Trade Representative’s office regarding the beef hormone dispute agreement. There will be some announcements in the next few days that could cause some confusion. Here’s what you need to know.
- The list of products we sent earlier is correct. Only those products are currently subject to 100 percent duties. Under the terms of the agreement, these products will remain on this list for three more years.
- The products that were on the list for the past nine years and removed as of March 23 will not be subject to 100 percent duties.
- The USTR will announce tomorrow it is delaying implementation of the new list until August 15. This is just a formality. The agreement announced yesterday is an agreement in principle only and still has to be formally accepted by the EU and by the U.S. While there’s no indication either entity will not accept the agreement, the USTR has to go through the process of formally extending the implementation of the new list anyway. There may be similar announcements in the future.
- The agreement cited above is a four-year agreement. The E.U. and U.S. will take steps starting next week to suspend the 100 percent duties altogether through continued negotiations to fully settle this dispute. If after four years – or anytime leading up to that – negotiations break down, it’s possible the U.S. will take steps to make changes to the list again.
AFI will continue to monitor this issue. Please contact the AFI office with any questions.
