The House passed major food safety legislation, the “Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009” (H.R. 2749), on July 30, 2009.
Focus now turns to the Senate where the lead food safety bill is the “FDA Food Safety Modernization Act” (S. 510) introduced on March 3 by Senate Assistant Majority Leader Richard Durbin (D-IL) and a bipartisan group of Senators from the Committee with responsibility for amendments to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) (the “Durbin bill”). The Senate is expected to take up consideration of the Durbin bill in the fall.
